Project: Swifts Nesting
Swifts are unique migratory birds whose global populations are steadily declining. Swifts demonstrate remarkable fidelity to their nesting sites and consistently prefer to return to the same nest they know, or at least to its immediate surroundings. The extensive construction and urban development taking place in population centers in Israel and around the world have severely damaged swift nesting sites, and the lack of available nesting locations has led to a drastic decline in their numbers. In most European countries, this bird has been declared a protected species, and environmental organizations have begun restoring nesting opportunities in order to conserve and preserve this remarkable bird. The Friends of the Swifts Association works toward this goal in cities throughout Israel.
