Project: The jellyfish and us

They have no head, face, or legs; they are composed of approximately 95% water and are found in every ocean in the world. Some are tiny—less than a millimeter in size—while others are enormous, with tentacles reaching approximately 30 meters in length. Among them is the creature possessing the most lethal venom in the world. For decades, jellyfish have appeared along the coasts of Israel, yet many questions concerning them remain unresolved.

The general public, as well as teachers and students, are invited to join researchers Dor Edelist and Dror Angel from the Department of Marine Civilizations at University of Haifa, who study jellyfish along the Israeli coastline. The researchers established a website that has already been used by thousands of citizens to report jellyfish observations along the country’s beaches. These observations assist the researchers in studying various phenomena related to jellyfish and in attempting to address the challenges caused by jellyfish swarms.

In this instructional unit, students can contribute to the research by reporting jellyfish observations and can also learn about jellyfish phenomena through inquiry using the database generated from citizen reports collected throughout the country.

Scientists: Dror Angel and Dor Edelist.
